Flow Visualisation

The laboratory is equipped with laser-based LDA (Laser Doppler Anemometry) and PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) measurement systems that enable velocity measurements around various types of test models and within the boundary layer, without affecting the flow field. Streamlines and vortex contours within the flow field are monitored and possible flow separations are detected by using the 2 or 3-dimensional velocity profiles obtained from measurements. The determination of wake patterns on the propeller plane, examination of flow dynamics behind the ship/propeller, optimization of ship form, and development of strategies to prevent/delay flow separation are facilitated through the use of LDV and/or PIV velocity measurements.
